Welcome to the web-home of Sustainable Frome, exploring how to prepare for a carbon constrained, energy lean world. Sustainable Frome meets every first Thursday of the month at the Masonic Hall, North Parade, Frome at 7pm. Come along ... and please bring some local food to share and £1 for the hall hire. SF strives to be inclusive, imaginative, practical and fun. Want to get involved? Why not join a project? It's fun and easy, you don't have to be an expert, you will meet lots of interesting people, strengthen your community, and learn new skills. What could be better than that?

CALLS to ACTION - a new page for ideas & volunteer requests. We are now giving GRANTS
Sustainable Frome is an informal gathering of over 400 people interested in sustainability issues and how they might be tackled in Frome in coming years. It has a simple management structure composed of a group of 'Elders' who meet infrequently and a HUB Group (CIC) which has a constitution (here) and deals with budget management and grant aid.
A discussion forum has been created to keep information together and facilitate discussion. Topic areas are; Transition Towns, Local events, Greener Buildings, Energy Generation, Food & Land, Fuel & Transport, Waste & Eco Schools and many other issues - these can be accessed via the forum. One other key group is the Transition Network Group - discussion forum here
We're on the Transition Towns MAP - Sustainable Frome are now officially recognised as a Transition Town (see 'Transition Towns' link)
The "Transition Network Group" a community-led initiative which is working towards both raising awareness of issues and the creation of an Energy Descent Action Plan for the town, based on work done in Totnes & Kinsale. The thinking behind this is simply that a town using much less energy and resources than we presently consume could, if properly planned for and designed, be more resilient, more abundant and more pleasurable than the present. The project will develop a Frome Energy Descent Action Plan over the next 2 – 3 years (from 2007) as a tool for designing a positive timetabled way down from the oil peak. We are working closely with Vision for Frome to ensure that our plans link with the emerging Community Strategy for Frome.
Members are; Katy Duke (chair), Tim Cutting, Ric Swann, Peter Macfadyen, Helen Kay & Alex Malcolm.
Some ideas coming out of the Vision for Frome & LDF consultations;
Frome Forest proposal (existing woodland in dark green, proposed in mid green).

Potential energy generation sites; Potential sites around the town. Flags = wind. Houses = methane digesters. Anchors = water turbines. Suns = solar PV.

Energy Generation to the north of the town;

Allotments & woodland to the north of the town; shows potential for new woodland (bright green) and allotments (yellow) plus Vallis Veg (middle). Also shows potential for methane generation at the Sewage Works & water turbines at weirs.
