A group of green minded people in Frome, North Somerset, have come together to convert an old banger into the town’s first electric car.
Set up in affiliation with Sustainable Frome, Frome Electric Car Group aims to successfully convert a 1993 Ford Fiesta by an eco-friendly, recession-busting roadworthy in the summer of 2010.
Alongside the immediate advantages of producing a car with zero emissions, no road tax and incredibly cheap fuel - the group then plans to convert a further 15 vehicles into affordably priced electric cars by the end of 2010, creating an opportunity for local employment.
The Frome Electric Car group formed in response to the production of hybrid and other low emission vehicles from the bigger car manufacturers. These vehicles are currently prohibitively expensive for many people and while their running emissions are minimal, 45 per cent of pollution caused by ordinary cars is from their manufacture.

UPDATE “After a frustrating period of inaction, the electric car is making steady progress with the old car now ready to have the engine inserted, most of the adaptations made , and all the new parts bought – now all we need is to fit it together (and a few technical challenges sorted out!)” Peter
